FileConverter is a foolproof application which keeps those annoying, "The application which created this could not be found" messages from appearing.
I wrote FileConverter because I download text files, pictures and QuickTime movies from AOL frequently, and I kept downloading files which wouldn't open when I double-clicked on them. It wasn't because I didn't have an application which could open the file, but because I didn't have the specific application which created the file. I thought this was annoying.
It turns out that every single Mac file has two "codes" which tell the Macintosh what kind of file it is -- the "TYPE" code and the "CREATOR" code. Any QuickTime movie, for instance, is of Type "MooV", but it could have been created by any of zillions of different applications.
When the "Creator" code of the document you're double-clicking doesn't match any of the applications on your hard disk, you get the annoying message. FileConverter lets you select up to three applications to open your Text, Pict and Movie files with.
Once you tell FileConverter which application to use, whenever you drop a document onto its icon, FileConverter changes the document's "creator code," so that double-clicking the document will open it with the application of your choice. It doesn't really "convert" your documents at all, it just changes their Creator codes.
FileConverter has plenty of foolproof safety checks built-in, so you don't need to worry about making your files unreadable.
When you double-click FileConverter, you'll see a dialog box asking you to choose the type of file you want to convert. Just click one of the 3 buttons, and in the dialog which follows, select the application which will open those documents. You can configure FileConverter to use a different application for each of the 3 types of documents.
Once FileConverter is configured, whenever you drag Text, Pict or Movie documents to its icon, their creator codes are quickly and safely modified for you. When you next double-click the document icons, they'll launch the application you want them to launch.
System Requirements: Macintosh computer with System 7.5 and AppleScript. You must have the "AppleScript" and "Finder Scripting Extension" System Extensions loaded.
